When Your Store Is Your Home: Lessons From TopsyDesign

We love a good flea market. The best have that elusive blend of antique silver, vintage clothes, old signs and worn furniture with a few quirky items thrown in for good measure. Kind of like what Brooklyn transplants Sam and Jared are selling out of their Silver Lake apartment and on their website. Their home is a mad, topsy-turvy mix of their finds, restored and displayed for sale. While most of us might be uncomfortable having visitors traipse in and out of our homes all day, we can learn a few lessons from someone else's experience.

  • Don't get too attached to anything. While this is obviously a necessity when selling your stuff is your livelihood, it's a good lesson for the rest of us too. As someone once told us, "It's not a party unless someone spills wine on the couch". While we don't wish to go that far, our home is about more than the stuff in it. For us, our home is about the people who visit and about knowing that we have a refuge and safe space in which to take care of ourselves and be creative. It's about the experiences rather than the things. The older we get, the more we find ourselves detaching from things and making it a point to declutter our lives of stuff as often as possible.
  • Always be visitor ready. Having your home be visitor ready does not mean having it be pristine with plastic covers on the couch. It does mean knowing that you'd be able to open the door if a friend dropped by unexpectedly, if a fireman needed to use your bathroom, that you could leave the door open while having a conversation with a neighbor or be able to say, "We could do it at my house," without stressing. Since we believe that how is your home so is your life, we believe it's being able to open your home, and thus your life, to new experiences.
